Returns Processing

Returns Sortation

Upon receipt of a returned product, the first step in processing the return typically includes a visual inspection and RMA verification to ensure the product is authorized for return. After this inspection, the product is sorted into one of three primary areas including:

  1. Return to inventory for resale
  2. Return to the manufacturer or supplying vendor
  3. Scrap

Because of the mix of returned product, there are several types of technology used to speed the returns process in the distribution industry.  These include:

  • The utilization of putting (returning) the item to its appropriate location in horizontal carousels.
  • The utilization of a small item sortation system including several divert lanes for specific product types.
  • A put-to-light system to return items to the appropriate shelving or carton flow rack.
  • A put-to-voice system to return items to the appropriate shelving or carton flow rack
  • A manual sorting process to return items to totes or boxes.
