Staging, Storage, and Retrieval using Pick Modules and Racking Systems:
In most high volume distribution center environments, a multi-level pick module
is used to pick fast moving units (eaches) or full cases. Similarly in split
case pick modules, typically the product is placed into a shipping carton or
tote. There are many picking technologies that can be used within a split case
pick module. These technologies include:
- Pick-to-light, Acculight
- Pick-to-display, PictureView
- Pick-to-voice, Vocollect
- RF-based picking, Exacta Mobile
- Pick by label, slap and ship
- Manual, pick-by-list
Likewise, full case pick modules often use the following types of equipment:
- Pallet flow racking
- Carton flow racking
- Slapper lanes with pallet conveyor
- Carton shelving
- Bulk stacked pallets on the floor
- Conventional selective rack
In most distribution centers over 50% of the overall labor is expended with picking operations. Therefore it is very important to study and possibly simulate the various picking methodologies to determine the optimum picking technology for your operation
