Sequencing
Several of Bastian’s customers provide automotive components to nearby
automobile or truck manufacturing facilities. A general planning download
is normally received about 12 hours in advance with the final sequence order
being received approximately 3 hours in advance. Accuracy and timely delivery
are required or huge charge backs can be applied by the automotive manufacturer.
Sequencing often involves preparing kits of sister components based on the
order such as a right and left door, 4 over the road tires plus a spare,
etc.
Either an adequate buffer of finished goods or a very quick expediting
process is necessary to ensure products are always delivered on time. Vehicle
ID information along with product characteristics are tracked for quality
and recall purposes. A wide variety of material handling systems compliment
the sequencing of product flow based on which automotive component is being
handled.
