When you think about warehouse or distribution center automation, what equipment comes to mind–conveyor systems, conventional palletizers, or maybe sortation systems? Although each is extremely useful in today’s warehouse and DC automation, the introduction of advanced mobile robotics will change the landscape of tomorrow’s industrial facilities.
With the summer project season just around the corner many industrial manufacturing companies are shoring up plans for their big projects. I recently had the pleasure to walk a manufacturing plant from front to back and back to front again in search of automated material handling opportunities. It certainly was a shocking experience because in this case, the client went naked!
While this client was the expert on their systems and operations, a trained eye in material handling– especially robotic –was a welcome investment of their time.
Bastian Material Handling and our sister company, ASAP Automation, recently had the opportunity to exhibit at WestPack in Anaheim, CA, February 8 through 10.
For those of you who don’t know, WestPack is one of the premier trade shows in the U.S., and the only trade show on the West Coast that addresses the material handling industry. All-in-all, the event showcases packaging and processing machinery, materials, and associated technologies from companies throughout the U.S.
We’re working on a robotic work cell for a customer right now that has sparked interest from everyone who’s seen it, so I thought I would spread the word.
Our client ships bags of products worldwide, so various languages and marking schemes are needed to satisfy regulations in destination countries. Currently, they must warehouse pallets of product with all these variations. Of course, orders are received for quantities greater or less than the quantity on hand causing upsets in production scheduling and delays in filling orders.
Like most things in life you have your early adopters, mainstream buyers, and your technology laggards. So how do you comfort those with automation phobia when they become members of a high profile project? In short it takes a lot of patience and communications to help eliminate the perceived risk.
