Sortation Technology and Conveyor Sortation Equipment

Sortation is the process of inducting and separating products to specific destination lanes with the purpose of arranging product for a better means of distribution to increase in productivity. Sortation systems are employed when a high quantites product needs to flow to different destinations. A sortation system is normally comprised of sortation technology and associated conveyor equipment and often diverts a product from one conveying system to another. Sortation systems are often designed to meet the growing demand for smaller order sizes, increased shipping accuracy, and more frequent shipments while improving efficiency in your distribution operations. Sortation is an ideal solution for separating products from in-feed conveyor lines to; shipping lanes, palletizing operations, packing stations & other sortation applications. These systems are versatile and can sort a wide range of product sizes and weights to multiple divert lanes.

Bastian Material Handling has a strong history of installing many types of sortation systems across various industries. Let us help you achieve new levels of automated sortation accuracy.

Shoe Sorters

Shoe sorters provide a very soft, positive divert at rates of 75 up to 220 cartons per minute. Shoe sorters can be used in applications where there is a wide variety of product sizes, shapes and weights being sorted. It is an excellent sortation choice when the product is fragile or easily damaged and requires a smooth and gentle movement from the sorter to the takeaway lane. Single and dual diverts are available and can be customized based on a particular conveyor system’s design.

Angled Roller Top (ART)

Angled roller top sortation equipment (ART) can be configured for very close divert locations, creating a considerable space savings, and they are easily re-configurable for maximum future flexibility. Product can be diverted off either side of the ART sorter at 30 or 22 degree diverts.

Cross Belt Sorters

Cross Belt sorters are used to sort parcels & small items, at high speed, that are difficult to sort, such as fragile or high friction items. Advantages include tight divert centers & sortation rates in excess of 500 pieces per minute.

Gapping Belt Conveyors

Gapping belt conveyor is used when gaps between incoming product need to be pulled prior to the sortation technology. By accelerating or decelerating gapping belt conveyor you maximize the throughput and performance of your sortation equipment.

High Speed Paddle Sorter

High speed paddle sorters are used to sort items difficult to convey due to their irregular shapes & small items.

High Speed Pusher Sorter

High speed pusher sorters are used to sort items difficult to convey due to their irregular shapes. Cylinder belt pushers can divert 120 items per minute and at a right angle onto chutes on close center lines.

Merge & Combiner Conveyors

Combiners & Merges are used to merge the flow of multiple lines of conveyor, typically from upstream pick modules, into a single stream of product on a single conveyor. Combiners and merges include the technologies of saw tooth merges, belt merges, switch tables, herring bone roller combiners, "belt to roller" merges, magna switches, and bi-directional transfers.

Narrow Belt Sorters

The Narrow Belt Sorter is designed with multiple narrow belts to transport product. High-friction divert wheels rise up between the belts to accurately divert product at a 30 or 90 degree angle down the divert lane. The conveyor is designed to transfer small to medium-size items such as boxes, cartons, totes, etc. and product can be transferred off either side of the sorter.

Pivot Wheel Sorters

Pivot wheel sorters are typically belt driven, and sort using two sets of wheels that pivot separately and in sequence, at each diverter station. Pivot wheel sorters run up to 75 cartons per minute.

Tilt Tray Sorters

Tilt tray sortation will simultaneously sort irregularly shaped products from small lightweight polybags to larger packages weighing up to 75 lbs. Tilt Tray sortation works best when the items are able to slip off or flow off the tray by gravity. Sortation rates with double induction can exceed 375 cartons per minute.
