Horizontal Carousels
Horizontal Carousels
A horizontal carousel is a series of bins mounted to an oval track.
The carousel bins rotate to bring the required items to the operator.
Computer controls are integrated into the carousel system allowing
you to perform a wide range of activities from simple transactions
to full inventory control. In addition horizontal carousels
provide:
- High throughput – with picking rates up to 950 lines per operator, per hour.
- Increase accuracy – since picking errors are virtually eliminated with the carousel’s integrated controls systems.
- Reduced manning hours – are a benefit of carousels since items are brought to the operator eliminating walk and search time for items. In addition, the carousel’s integrated controls system automatically queues orders, batches picks, and positions the carousels for picking thus reducing idle and dwell time on behalf of the operator.
- Increased cube utilization – via bins that are available in a wide range of heights and widths and easily adjustable shelves. Likewise carousels can be tiered with or without mezzanines depending on space requirements to maximize cube space. Customers have been able to reclaim up to 75% of floor space when implementing carousel systems.
- Return on investment (ROI) – Bastian’s customers who install carousel systems often recover their investment in less than one year through improved productivity, reduced floor space, reduced error rate, reduced shrinkage, and great uptime.
Bastian offers the following types of horizontal carousels:
- Bottom drive carousels –are designed for larger live loads and heavier duty cycles. In addition, bottom drive carousels feature ten standard bin widths. Likewise custom widths available, and can be configured for up to 140 bins.
The structural features of a bottom drive carousel include:
- A modular design allowing for easy installation, expansion, and relocation.
- A bottom supporting frame to distribute the carousel’s load uniformly over a large flow area.
- A capacity of up to 2,500 pounds per live bin load.
- A carousel that is tested and the sections are match marked before shipment.
- Carousel units which can be stacked without the need for a full mezzanine. This allows you to make use of the total available height.
- Catwalks or mezzanines that can be mounted directly to the top of the carousel or supported between carousel units.
- A single carousel capacity of up to 217,000 pounds.
- Top drive carousels – are designed for a wide variety of standard and lighter duty applications. Carousels are available with either double or single yoke configurations providing adequate machine capacity without unnecessary excess. Top drive carousels are furnished in seven standard bin widths, with other custom widths available, and can be configured for up to 100 bins.
Flexibility, ease of maintenance and reliability are hallmarks of these low cost machines. From high throughput picking bin distribution centers to progressive assembly applications, Bastian has utilized top drive carousels to provide solutions for many years.
The structural features of a top drive carousel include:
- A modular design allowing for easy installation, expansion, and relocation.
- A heavy top structure and suspension frame distributing the load, extending component life, and assuring a smooth and quiet operation.
- A capacity of up to 1,500 pounds per live bin load on double yoke models and 300 pounds per bin on single yoke models.
- A carousel that is tested and the sections are match marked before shipment.
- Carousel units which can be stacked without the need for a full mezzanine. This allows you to make use of the total available height.
- Catwalks or mezzanines that can be mounted directly to the top of the carousel or supported between carousel units.
- Double ladder support columns transmitting loads to a channel base section.
- Lower guide rails which are adjustable for height allowing the bottom shelf of the carousel to be raised to work bench level.
- Twin Bin Carousels – are designed for applications requiring greater volume capacities, more SKUs or faster throughputs. They are furnished in four standard bin depths, and can be configured for 8-50 bins, each having two pick faces.
Twin Bin carousels are based on the bottom drive design. These carousels distribute loads uniformly over a large floor area without requiring a high load concentration near uprights. As a result, less bracing is required with the bottom drive carousel than what is needed for top drive models. Likewise, leveling is easier, and seismic protection better. Twin bin carousels also allow for superior maintenance accessibility. Twin bin carousels also have lower profiles for greater utilization of overhead space.
The structural features of a twin bin carousel include:

- A bottom supporting frame to distribute the carousel’s load uniformly over a large flow area.
