Stage 2: Current System Assessment
In this early stage we need to learn your business and where it’s going. We conduct several facility walk-throughs, perform various activities as operators, and study your current business practices.

• Facility layout – Bastian will develop accurate, as is, drawings of your current facility. Specific focus will be given to the interface between construction and facility operations.
• Management and operator interviews – Bastian will identify relevant strategic and operational issues that will potentially impact the process of the System Configuration Analysis and the final recommendations.

Document material flow – Bastian will document the types of storage and material handling equipment utilized in your current facility and the resulting material flow in the operations. Actual material flows will be mapped on a CAD drawing showing the flow within the operational process. The team will then develop preliminary space requirements to support the business activities. These requirements will be refined later in the design process as material handling techniques are evaluated.

• Document information flow – Bastian will document the information systems environment within the operation. Specific emphasis is placed on processing steps that require paper documents or interface with information systems.
• Compile results – Bastian will summarize the results of all the previous engineering studies and present a detailed schedule for the remainder of the System Configuration Analysis.
