Sortation Solutions
Sortation is the process of inducting and separating products to specific destination lanes with the purpose of arranging product for a more efficient means of distribution while increasing productivity. Sortation systems are often employed when high quantities of product need to flow to different destinations. Sortation systems are normally comprised of a specific type of sortation technology and often times many different pieces of associated conveyor equipment such as accumulation conveyor or print and apply applicators.
Sortation systems are often designed to meet the growing demand for smaller order sizes, increased shipping accuracy, or increasing shipment frequency while improving efficiency in your distribution operations. Sortation Systems are an ideal solution for separating products from in-feed conveyor lines to; shipping lanes, palletizing operations, packing stations & other sortation applications. These systems are versatile and can sort a wide range of product sizes and weights to multiple divert lanes.
With our years of experience with sortation systems, we have plethora of field tested designs to achieve a reliable solution.
Product Induction
Product sortation is one of the main constraints companies face in the process of getting their goods to market. Never before has accuracy and timeliness of order fulfillment been a higher concern than right now. Combine these factors with an ever increasing requirement to reduce resources and trim costs within the distribution channel, and one quickly understands the benefits and efficiencies that automated sortation systems deliver. There are many types of automated sortation systems that range widely in complexity and design. It is very important that one chooses the appropriate technology for his or her particular application.

Facility Layout Design
The overall design of the system is key to the success of the system. BMH uses the latest in 3D computer aided design tools to layout our systems. It is important that each system be laid out to show integration with other facility equipment and processes. The design process is the most important aspect of each project and is vital to the overall success of the project. BMH employs one of the most experienced sortation design team in the industry for this very reason.
Material Handling Installation
Next to the system design and the technology selection process, the actual installation of the system is the most important part of each project. BMH utilizes a comprehensive, hands-on approach to project management. We also utilize the best, most experienced installers in the industry that specialize in automated sortation installation.
Industrial Controls
Regardless the size and complexity of the sortation system, successful projects are defined by the design and implementation of their warehouse control systems (WCS). Bastian Controls utilizes the most advanced technology and specializes in both PLC and PC based systems. Our systems also have the ability to provide you real time alerts via email or cell phone on critical systemic or operational issues.
Engineering Study
Often times BMH utilizes 3D modeling and Engineering Studies to prove the validity of a proposed system. By analyzing your real data and incorporating our findings into the system design, we can better recommend the best overall solution for each individual application.
Our Product Induction Automation Technologies
Automated Order Routing (AOR)
Automated Order Routing (AOR) interfaces our automated conveyor systems controls to Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and other host systems to smartly route and sort products to designated zones. AOR can help provide maximum operational flexibility with features that include: priority routing, zone referencing, and divert Confirmation.
Automated Carton Singulation
Regardless the sortation technology used, it is vital that cartons enter the sorter in single file fashion and not in a side-by-side configuration. To achieve this, BMH utilizes a number of different technologies including ARB singulator's, speed changes, and case alignment conveyors.
Automated Gapping
In addition to ensuring all products enter the sorter in single file fashion, it is equally important that the products have the required gap between them. Without the proper gap between products, the sortation technology will not be able to effectively divert the products to their assigned divert lanes. BMH utilizes a number of different technologies to automatically achieve this. These technologies include; automated gapping conveyors, brake belt conveyors, and ARB gapping units.
Multiple Infeed Line Merge
Often times the sortation technology will receive products on conveyors coming from different areas of the facility. These conveyor lines must be merged together so that they can be inducted onto the sortation technology. BMH utilizes such technologies for this purpose as, belt and roller merges, sawtooth merges, and ARB switches to name just a few.

Product Scanning
Identifying product is a must when it comes to sortation. The better one’s scanning equipment, the more reliable and accurate the sorting of their product will be. There are many different technologies which can be employed during product scanning operations. It’s very important that the proper technology is integrated with each application. BMH has a tremendous amount of experience integrating scanning technology into material handling systems.
Our Scanning Services
Facility Layout Design
The layout out of your specific facility is a primary consideration when selecting the proper scanning technology. It is vital that the key scanning areas be located and sized appropriately in order for you to maximize the benefits of your sortation system. Lighting is also an important element that must be considered during the design phase of your project. Product testing should be done during the design phase in order to properly specify the correct scanning equipment required for the application.
Material Handling Installation
Just as important as the selection of the appropriate technology is the proper installation of the scanning equipment. Scanning equipment is highly specialized and should be installed by Bastian's factory trained professionals. Bastian's experienced installation team will save you time and money over the course of your project.
Industrial Controls
Even the best scanning equipment is only as good as the controls programs that run them. BMH has years of experience programming high speed scanning systems.
Our Scanning Automation Technologies
RFID Scanning
RFID Scanning is considered by many to be the future of high speed product scanning. BMH has implemented several systems which implore this technology and is on the cutting edge of RFID integration.
Bar Code Scanning
Barcode scanning is one of the most common ways of identifying products. BMH has years of experience working with all forms of barcode scanners and camera systems. No matter the symbology or format, BMH can help find the appropriate scanning solution for your application.
