Steve Elsbury discusses how BMH helped Prime Distribution Services become more competitive in their market

pds-ptd1Steve Elsbury is the Director of Information Technology for Prime Distribution Services, located in Plainfield, Indiana. Steve recently took the time to speak about the system that Bastian Material Handling and ASAP Automation implemented at their new 1.2 million sq. ft. facility, and how it has helped them to become even more competitive in their market. PDS Plainfield’s goal is to provide vendors with a single point of distribution that incorporates warehousing, cross-docking, packaging, and multi-vendor freight consolidation into their supply chain. PDS enjoys a very strong relationship with Wal-Mart and is recognized as one of Wal-Mart’s premier order consolidation partners. PDS had several goals in mind at the start of this project. They were consolidating all of their existing Indianapolis facilities into the new Plainfield facility. They wanted to expand their existing Warehouse Management System, and they needed a system that could handle an anticipated volume of 20,000-25,000 cases per 8-hour shift to build mixed pallets. BMH and ASAP were able to help PDS with their consolidation and WMS expansion. Their system positioned PDS to be able to grow order volume without adding additional labor. Operator productivity and throughput has increased dramatically as a result. Some of the key technologies implemented at PDS Plainfield: • Three 2-level pick modules, with each pick module consisting of approximately 200 pick faces • ASAP Automation’s “Pick-To-Display” and Exacta Warehouse Management System (WMS) • Zero pressure accumulation conveyor (EZ Logic) • Transnorm Systems mega merge measuring 18’ long by 14’ wide • Accusort 9-sided omni-directional scan tunnel • Rockwell RSView Human-Machine Interface (HMI) with PC- based controls using Steeplechase Click here to watch Steve Elsbury discuss the impact these technologies have had on their business.
