MODEX 2024: Where Your Automation Journey Begins

Grace Stafford & Katie Smith | 28 February 2024

As a leading systems integrator, Bastian Solutions understands material handling solutions do not come in a one-size-fits-all package. The company holds decades of experience across a broad spectrum of industry verticals and our experts partner with customers to engineer warehouse automation and material handling systems designed to achieve business objectives.

Bastian is eager to exhibit at MHI’s MODEX 2024 trade show March 11-14 in Atlanta, Georgia. Booth B5619 will feature various automation and technology, along with opportunities to learn more about how Bastian can help select, implement and optimize the right material handling equipment and processes to Engineer Your Competitive Edge

During the four-day show, on Tuesday, March 12 at 3:30 p.m. we will hold a seminar where experts will discuss how technology solutions and effective system integration help companies transform their operations to address common warehouse challenges while optimizing material movement, operator tasks and information systems.

Where Industry-Wide Challenges Meets Automation

Our booth, B5619, will showcase how the right material handling technology can streamline and improve unit load handling operations in distribution centers. The ability to efficiently transport, store, build and ship pallets and other heavy payloads is a growing need in warehousing facilities.

On one side of the issue, customers are demanding more SKU coverage and flexibility in how they can receive products – direct to customer, brick and mortar stores, BOPIS (buy online pickup in store) to name a few.

On the other side, labor availability and productivity are still major obstacles to peak performance for a vast majority of distributors. This is where the right consulting, automation and integration can make an enterprise level impact.

Optimizing Every Step of Unit to Case Handling Operations

Bastian’s booth will feature a vast majority of the pallet movement distribution facilities encounter, starting with an order from a large display of a viastore viapal unit load ASRS (automated storage and retrieval system) crane. This high-bay stacker crane can support tall, rack supported buildings of up to 45m (~148 ft.) and handle loads up to 3,000 kg (~6,600 lbs.) From the crane, the ordered pallet will travel down Bastian CDLR (chain driven live roller) pallet conveyor to P&D (pickup and delivery) conveyor, with one motor driving the whole section. This P&D conveyor is bi-directional so full pallets can be sent back into the crane for storage too.

A Movu ifollow AMR (autonomous mobile robot) will pick up the pallet from the stand, drive it across the booth to another P&D stand. This versatile AMR can independently map and modify routes around obstacles while transporting loads of up to 1,200 kg (~2,645 lbs.). The ifollow will transfer the pallet to the second stand, also manufactured by Bastian. This transfer frees up the AMR to complete other tasks, rather than waiting at the stand until depalletization is completed. By using the P&D stands, fewer vehicles are required for the system and a lower implementation cost is maintained.

From there, a cobot equipped with Bastian designed EoAT (end of arm tool) and controls will depalletize boxes from the pallet onto a conveyor. This case conveyor from Bastian is equipped with four HRTs (high-rate transfers), which will divert each case 90-degrees. HRTs are ideal for sorting light to medium sized items in high throughput systems.

The cases will make their way back to the cobot, which utilize Bastian Solutions StackOrder™ software to intelligently place them onto another P&D stand. Bastian Solutions StackOrder contains our proprietary, patent-pending software that allows users to visualize, edit and implement various patterns in real-time.

Supporting Solutions Through Quality Manufacturing

As well as showcasing various innovations in our booth, Bastian Solutions’ own technologies can be found in several booths across the show floor during MODEX. Our flexible ML2 mini load AV (autonomous vehicle) utilizing ANT driven navigation will be operating in BlueBotics booth (C6092). The Raymond Corporation, booth B5406, will also feature a ML2, equipped with a conveyor appliance that will interact with Bastian conveyor. Exacta Maestro® our proprietary AV fleet management software, will be managing the ML2 and other vehicles’ tasks in the booth as well.

Begin Your Automation Journey

Bastian experts and engineers will be available throughout the tradeshow to speak with attendees at booth B5619. Find more details on how to register for the show, schedule a meeting and learn more here.
